Foothill-ready attention for Sandy dogs

Sandy is about twenty minutes south of my Millcreek base on I-15 or 1300 East. It is a foothill town with the Wasatch right behind it, and like Cottonwood Heights it comes with a catch: Little Cottonwood Canyon is protected watershed and closed to dogs, so the nearest big canyon is not an option.

What Sandy does have is Dimple Dell, and it is genuinely one of the best dog resources in the valley. Miles of gulch trail, shade, and enough room that a group can spread out without meeting a leashed dog every hundred yards. Most Sandy pack days start there, with Millcreek Canyon for the longer outings.

Is Sandy too far south for you?

No, but it is toward the edge of my range, so Sandy pickups get grouped onto specific days rather than spread across the week. Tell me your schedule and I will tell you which days work.

Can my dog hike Little Cottonwood with the pack?

No. Little Cottonwood is protected watershed and dogs are prohibited year round. Dimple Dell is the everyday answer and Millcreek Canyon is the long-day answer.

Do you take reactive dogs on Dimple Dell?

Sometimes, and carefully. Dimple Dell has width and sight lines that a narrow canyon trail does not, which makes it one of my better options for a dog who needs space. We start with a solo assessment either way.
